TMZ Sports broke a story yesterday regarding former boxing great and current president/CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya. According to their report, De La Hoya checked himself into a rehab clinic to deal with substance abuse issues.
I, like many other boxing fans follow Oscar on Twitter, and have recently been privy to some very interesting tweets from the former world champion and Olympic gold medalist.
Here is the statement released by De La Hoya to TMZ Sports: "After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws. Throughout my career and my life, I have always met all challenges head-on, and this is no different. I am confident that with the support of my family and friends, I will become a stronger, healthier person. I ask for respect and privacy as my family and I go through this process."
As a fan of De La Hoya, I sincerely hope that he will be able to get through this rough patch of his life. Oscar has always been classy and carried himself as a professional, so if he has the right people in his corner I have little doubt that he will come out of this situation just fine.
