I just saw this over at Basketbawful and couldn't stop laughing. It's spot on. Stan Van always looks pissed, and this piece captured it really well.
Hedo Turkoglu makes four 3's and the coach is looking upset on every one. Priceless. Check it out.

Happy New Year 2011: Links to Close Out 2010

I've never seen a year go by as fast as 2010 did, and despite its speed it presented sports fans with some great moments. People like Tiger Woods, Drew Brees, Coach K, Michael Vick, and Manny Pacquiao stayed atop our headlines, providing us with memories that will last a lifetime.
If 2011 is anywhere near as good as its predecessor, than we are all in for a real treat.
I just want to thank all the readers of this site for your continued following. Without all of you around the world (193 Countries) this blog would have folded many moons ago. I am grateful that you have taken an interest in Sports with Mr. Factoid, and it is my pledge to keep this party rolling until the wheels literally fall off, or until somebody pays me for my services.
With that said, Happy New Year and may God bless you all!

NBA Video: LaMarcus Aldridge Dunks Over Al Jefferson
LaMarcus Aldridge has been on somewhat of a tear the last eight games leading Portland to an 5-3 mark during the stretch. Without Brandon Roy, Aldridge has adequately picked up the scoring load.
On Thursday night Aldridge finished with 27 points and a very sweet alley-oop dunk in a winning effort against the always formidable Utah Jazz.

Nick Van Exel's Son Charged with Capital Murder

The son of former NBA star Nick Van Exel is facing capital murder charges. Nickey Van Exel was charged with murder after allegedly shooting a friend and moving the body in an attempt to cover it up.
According to Mile High Buzz, Nickey and his friend Bradley Eyo were wrestling around with a loaded shotgun last Saturday when it was accidentally went off, striking Eyo in the chest. Van Exel then drove the body to a nearby lake and dumped it off. Lake Ray Hubbard is less than a mile away from his home in Dallas, Texas. The body of the 23 year-old Eyo was discovered on Sunday
Nickey, 20, confessed to accidentally shooting his friend and is now being held on $1million bond.
Paul Johnson, the younger Van Exel's attorney, told The Associated Press that his client told police he shot Eyo, a longtime friend and neighbor, while the two were engaged in "horseplay" with a shotgun. He said Van Exel didn't know the gun, which belonged to his stepfather, was loaded.

NHL Video: Alexander "The Great" Displays Shooting Skills for ESPN
Alexander Ovechkin is the most talented and skilled scorer in the National Hockey League. Granted it's a subject that could be debated, especially with Sidney Crosby scoring goals the way he is right now, but I'm not in the mood to do so.
Ovechkin stopped by ESPN studios and took time out to demonstrate just what makes him so great.
Those poor dolls never stood a chance against Ovie. Now of course it's easier to hit dolls than to score real-time goals, but what you've just witnessed is still rather impressive.
I'm looking forward to the NHL's Winter Classic. The Penguins and Capitals are going to put on a show to be remembered.

Tiger Woods Still Top Earner in Golf
Tiger Woods had a rough year, but despite losing his wife, his image, and his game, Eldrick still ranks at the top of the money list for professional golfers.
According to Golf World and correspondent Ron Sirak, who compose the annual list of golf's top 50 earning figures, Woods remained at the top with $72.3 million in his pot.
I just can't feel bad for a guy with that much bread. Even if the wifey walked away with the reported $110 million, Tiger isn't struggling one bit.
Lefty was second with $40.2 million, and my favorite golfer as a kid, Arnold Palmer finished third with $36 million. I didn't know Arnie was still raking in the dough like that.

NBA Video: KG Injures Leg Against Pistons
The Celtics have been able to win games despite not having playmaker Rajon Rondo in the lineup the last couple weeks.
On Wednesday night though the C's witnessed Kevin Garnett go down with a leg injury. Garnett, who has been playing at a high level this season hurt the leg in the first quarter on a non-contact slam dunk.
The initial x-ray came back negative, but KG will undergo an MRI on Thursday to check for damage. ESPN Boston reporter Chris Forsberg said it appeared to be a calf injury and not the same knee that Garnett hurt against Utah a couple of years back.
If the Big Ticket is down for any extended period of time it's certainly bad news for a Boston club that has been one of the NBA's best this season.

NBA Video: Lamar Odom Behind The Back Missed Finger Roll Putback Dunk
Lamar Odom and the Lakers desperately needed a win Wednesday night against the New Orleans Hornets. Thanks to plays like the one you're about to watch L.A. did just that by the score of 103-88.
There are very few players in the league that could have done what Odom did on that play. He ran the break, went behind his back, put up a smooth looking finger roll, and finished the play with a sick put back dunk. Nice job Mr. Kardashian.
Sorry the audio quality is so poor. Hat tip to SportsNewsNightly.

NBA Video: Tyreke Evans With Game Winning Half-Court Shot
If the entire Grizzlies v. Kings game was as exciting as the last 5.5 seconds, then the fans in Sac-town got a real treat Wednesday night.
The shot O.J. Mayo made was good enough to be make top plays. His degree of difficulty was at least 10, but Evans making the shot beyond halfcourt blew Mayo's bucket out of the water.
Next time I suggest O.J. not leave so much time on the clock. In the NBA 1.5 seconds is an eternity, and Evans proved it.

NBA Video: George Hill Stands up to Kobe
The Spurs took the ladies, I mean the Lakers to the woodshed last night, and in the process demonstrated the toughness they will need to be a real contender come playoff time.
George Hill and Kobe has a bit of a scuffle in the second quarter. Check it out.
I always like to see the young guys stand up to the old timers. It's good for the game. Kobe couldn't punk Hill and couldn't help the Lakeshow escape their third straight L. Final score was 97-82.
That just reminded me of when Kobe was a young player and got two-pieced by Chris Childs.

Golden Brett Facing Light Punishment for Sterger Mess

Brett Favre's career is winding down on a very sad note. The NFL legend, according to the NY Post, will be facing a fine for his alleged misconduct with former Jets employee Jenn Sterger. Commissioner Goodell and the NFL are expected to release an official statement in the next day or two.
Favre allegedly texted Sterger some inappropriate photos of his joystick and included a few raunchy words to get her on team Favre. Sterger claims Favre actually continued his pursuit long after she know longer worked for the Jets.
The story was initially reported by Fox sports reporter @Jay_Glazer via his twitter account earlier this morning.
The fine is rumored to be about $50,000.

NBA Video: Amare Stoudemire Dunks on LeBron James
Amare is playing some great basketball right now, although I still think he could rebound at a higher level. Last night his Knicks traveled to Miami to take on the Heat in a highly anticipated matchup of solid eastern conference teams.
Check Stoudemire out here delivering the goods to LeBron James.
The Heat won the game 106-98. STAT finished with 30 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in the losing effort.

An Absurd Plea: Sam Bradford for NFL MVP

When the NFL season began expectations in St. Louis were awfully low. Despite having drafted Sam Bradford with the #1 overall pick in the draft, and offensive lineman Roger Safold with the first pick in the second round, few had faith that the Rams would be anything more than a basement dweller again.
Sam Bradford has the Rams entering the final week of the regular season with a legit opportunity to make the playoffs. At 7-8, they are the NFC West division leaders and just need to defeat a Seattle Seahawks squad that will enter the game Sunday night without veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. We all know last year the Rams were 1-15 and the laughing stock of the league. This is a turn around.
Bradford has been the difference maker in St. Louis all season long. The rookie from Oklahoma has been solid, and he's demonstrated poise that isn't common in young quarterbacks. He doesn't look nervous or rattled in the pocket, and does a good job with his reads and progressions. I don't see the Eli Manning "bad body language" in Sam after he makes a mistake either. He's more like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady in his approach to the game. He's a perfectionist, but he clearly understands he's in the early stages of a process to get better. And yes, I did just compare him to Peyton and Tom!
For me, it's not about the numbers that Bradford has posted, although they are quite impressive given the talent that he has around him. The Rams won six games the last three seasons with pro bowler Stephen Jackson and former pro bowl quarterback Mark Bulger. Bradford has eclipsed that in just one season.
I was someone who believed that the Rams should have drafted Ndamukong Suh with their pick, but I must say that the front office made the right choice. Bradford has definitely been the fit St. Louis needed.

Sam has quietly been able to put criticism to rest that his shoulder would be able to hold up to NFL hits. He's been sacked 31 times and on the deck more than that. The young man has shown durability and toughness so far, and that's been a plus for the Rams.
The team finally believes they have a leader, and it's evident in their play on both sides of the ball. The defense, which is also much improved, now gets geared up to make stops, knowing that if they can get Sam the ball the team has a chance to put points on the board and win games. It's a big difference from how things were.
Bradford's numbers put him in elite company for a rookie qb. He's completing 60.5% of his passes. That's impressive with the lack of depth the Rams have at wideout. He's thrown for 3,357 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. He does have 14 picks, but that's much less than some other guys.
It's hard to make a pitch for a rookie to win MVP (actually absurd), but without Bradford the St. Louis Rams wouldn't be anywhere near where they are today. We would be looking at another year of two to three win ball and more jokes about how bad they are. That's a fact.

Sure, Tom Brady is having a great season and Michael Vick is redefining his career, but Sam Bradford is the rookie quarterback who has transformed a horrible team into a contender.
Yes, I know the division is TRASH, but the fact remains that St. Louis is atop of it. The team and the city are sniffing the playoffs for the first time in years and it's all because of Sam Bradford.

NBA Video: Dwight Howard Free Throw Violation
I can remember watching Karl Malone take an eternity to shoot his free throws back in the day, so I was really surprised when the officials called Dwight Howard for a 10 second violation during the Magic's Christmas day game against Boston.
I honestly didn't think that rule was still on the books.
Orlando snapped Boston's 14 game winning streak with their 86-75 victory. It was a good week for Orlando, who also snapped San Antonio's 10 game win streak on Thursday.

NFL Video: Chris Cooley Stars in "Butterfinger Man"
Chris Cooley has been one of the top receiving threats at the tight end position in the NFL for years, so when he inexplicably drops a touchdown pass, it's kind of a big deal.
Cooley was all by his lonesome in the back of the end zone against the Jaguars on this play and just dropped the ball. I imagine he was still day dreaming of sugar plum fairies. Whatever the case may be, it was a really bad drop from a sure-handed guy.
The Redskins were able to pull out the victory despite Cooley's drop by the score of 20-17 in overtime.

Ed Reed and his Baltimore Ravens were literally on fire Sunday afternoon. The Ravens safety found himself going up in smoke after his jacket got to close to a sideline heater. Check it out.

UConn Lady Huskies Claim All-Time Record

On Tuesday night the University of Connecticut women's basketball team became soul owner of the longest winning streak in Division I college basketball history. It's an accomplishment that many thought would never happen.
Their 89th victory in a row looked similar to many others along the way, as they blew out another overmatched opponent in 20th ranked Florida State. The final score was 93-62.
With the win, Geno Auriemma and UConn wiped away a record that stood for nearly 40 years. John Wooden's UCLA Bruins won 88 straight games from 1971-1974.
"I don't want my team to compare themselves to anyone," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said afterward. "I'm not John Wooden and this isn't UCLA. This is Connecticut and that's good enough."
During the winning streak UConn has beaten their opponents mercilessly. They've won games by an average greater than 30 points per contest, and have claimed the last two NCAA national titles.

During the winning streak UConn has beaten their opponents mercilessly. They've won games by an average greater than 30 points per contest, and have claimed the last two NCAA national titles.
It's safe to say that we've had a chance to witness college basketball at it's best during the last 2 1/2 years. Mya Moore and the Lady Huskies didn't ask for respect, nor did they rest on previous successes, but what they did do was make all of us stop and take notice of a marvelous accomplishment obtained through hard work and dedication. Their dynasty is one for that will live on forever, and that should be remembered for it's utter dominance and competitive grace.
Congrats to the Lady Huskies!

Hoops Video: Brook Lopez Dunks on Hasheem Thabeet
Brook Lopez got down right nasty with Hasheem Thabeet Tuesday night. The former Stanford standout took Thabeet to the cup with authority and finished with a beastly one handed monster jam. Have a look.
Lopez had another strong performance overall, finishing with 26 points and six rebounds to lead the Nets to their ninth victory of the season. He's averaging 19.3 points and an underwhelming 6.3 boards per game this year.

Video: Denver Nuggets Perform "Christmas in Hollis"
The Denver Nuggets aren't letting their 16-10 record or Carmelo Anthony's rumored departure get them down this holiday season. Members of the team recently got together to recreate the Run-DMC classic, "Christmas in Hollis".
I don't think it's the worst remake I've ever heard, but it's not high on my list either. Check it out.
Is it me, or did Sheldon Williams stick out like a sore thumb? I still can't understand how he ended up with Candice Parker.

Video: Shaq Conducts Boston Pops
The Diesel does whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and in all actuality he usually does it better than the next guy.
Shaq went classical by agreeing to conduct the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Tanglewood Orchesta on Monday night at Boston Symphony Hall. He led the orchestras through "Sleigh Ride" and "We Are The Champions". As always, Shaq didn't fail to entertain the crowd. Here's a little video.
What did you think? Does he have a chance to be a great conductor when his career finally ends?

Hoops Video: Blake Griffin Dunkfest versus Timberwolves
Blake Griffin was back at it on Monday night against Minnesota. At this point in the season he's averaging 20.7 ppg and 12.3 rpg. Those aren't even close to being rookie numbers. He dropped 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and had seven dimes against the T-Wolves.
Here are a couple of his vicious dunks.
There isn't another candidate for rookie of the year, and it's clear that Griffin is the runaway winner. Even if John Wall were to get healthy and start balling out of his skull, he's just to far behind on the wow meter. With the stats Griffin is posting on a nightly basis, the kid deserves to not only win ROY, but he should be in the all-star game.

Lingerie Football League Video: Fight Between Tampa Breeze and Miami Caliente
I haven't had the chance to catch any LFL games yet, but if they keep having cat fights that could certainly change very soon. I mean what guy in his right mind wouldn't want to see hot chicks in lingerie fighting?
In the following clip, the Tampa Breeze are taking a knee to run the clock out, but a player from the Miami Caliente isn't enthused about it. This game took place on Friday night.

Vick Takes Abuse From New York Post

Michael Vick may be playing the best football of his career, but his critics are still hard at work to make sure his image remains forever tarnished.
Even after leading his Philadelphia Eagles back from sure defeat yesterday, newspapers across the country still find a way to take shots at the former Virginia Tech star. The New York Post was at the forefront of Monday's madness. The headline reads "Giants Dog It". I'm not upset about that part at all, but what did erk me was the photo that accompanies it.
As members of the media, we are entitled to post and say whatever we want, but it's my personal opinion that at some point it's best to move on. It's not as if people aren't aware of the Vick story, hell it's been one of the top stories of the last four years.
I don't expect people to ever forgive the man, but it won't hurt to try to forget.

Boxing News: Hopkins v. Pascal on Weekend Agenda
The ageless Bernard Hopkins (51-5-1) will do battle this Saturday night with WBC/IBO light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1) at the Pepsi Center in Quebec, Canada. The fight will air live on Showtime in case you have the desire to watch the senior citizen lace up the gloves yet again.
The last time B-Hop stepped in the ring he fought in one of the worst bouts of recent memory, as he and Roy Jones Jr. engaged a 12 round snorfest. I'm still trying to forget how bad it was.
Pascal is coming off the biggest win of his career, as he upset one of boxing's top pound for pound fighters in Chad Dawson. Pascal brought his A game against Dawson, and as a result scored an 11th round technical decision.
You can see both fighters here in the final presser for the fight.
Hopkins, who will be 46 in January, still believes he has gas left in the tank and a lot to prove. The younger Pascal will once again need to be sharp if he expects to beat Bernard, who never makes a fight pretty for the fans or easy for his opponents.

Video: Michael Vick is Pitchman for Woodbury Nissan
Michael Vick was one of the biggest stars in all of sports before he went to prison. His endorsements and popularity rivaled Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James. Vick's Nike ads are legendary for their creativity and flat out awesomeness.
That was then, and this is now.
Vick recently shot his first commercial since being released from the federal penitentiary, and to be quite honest, it's not half bad. Don't get me wrong, it's not the Michael Vick Experience, but it's solid for a guy who most believed would never see NFL grass again.

The folks at Woodbury Nissan gave Vick a shot, and for that I give them props. According to reports though, Vick wasn't paid for the commercial, but does get to drive a Nissan Armada (Valued at $54,000) from the dealership for free.

NBA Video: Celtics Repond to Questions About Possible Knicks Rivalry
When I think about great rivalries in sports, the Knicks versus the Celtics isn't the first matchup that comes to mind. It was good back in the 80's and early 90's, but since 2000 the boys from the big apple have been stinking up Madison Square Garden with profound regularity.
This year though, the Knickerbockers are playing some of the best ball in the league, and later tonight they will have the opportunity to prove just how good they are against the defending eastern conference champion Boston Celtics.
Listen in hear as Paul Pierce responds to some idiotic questions.
Paul Pierce is an asshole, but he's right. Who really knew that these two teams had a rivalry other than the dumb ass reporter who asked the question? In my opinion it takes two to have a rivalry, and for the last five to seven years it's been one team beating up on the other.
Feel free to tweet me when things change.

High School Basketball Player Assaults Referee
In sports and in life sometimes your emotions can get the best of you. Keeping your head on straight and maintaining poise is definitely important. If you don't believe me, just ask Ron Artest and the fans involved in the brawl at the Palace in Auburn Hills back in 2004.
In the following clip, a young basketball player from Desoto High school in Florida took out his frustrations on a referee after a technical foul was called on him.
I didn't think that he would go beyond the push, but the youngster pulled off a body slam that would make Big John Studd proud. Ouch!

Video: KHL Hockey Brawl
Most fights in hockey take at least a few minutes to develop, but not the one in the following clip. There clearly must have been some bad blood between these two KHL squads. It took all of five seconds for them to drop the gloves and duke it out.
via Youtube:
Top KHL squad Avangard managed to finish their home game against league underdogs Vityaz, 3-2, despite a mass brawl. The incident occurred almost immediately after face-off. The Vityaz players went on the offensive after only six seconds of play. Avangard's management says the brawl was a pre-planned act against their team. They have demanded that Vityaz be excluded from the KHL, and also want a lifetime disqualification for the club's management. In January 2010, a similar brawl occurred during the clubs' meeting in the Moscow region. Back then, the game was suspended, while Vityaz were considered to have struck the first blow, but avoided serious sanction from the KHL.

Hoops Video: LeBron Makes Bucket From Behind Backboard
It was only a matter of time before the Miami Heat started winning games. Since Miami Thrice left Cleveland, they've been rolling along, and making the game look like child's play.
Check out LeBron as he buries a bucket over the backboard.
With Monday's victory over New Orleans, the Heat ran their winning streak to nine games, and improved their overall record to 18-8. Looks to me like they've begun to gel and that isn't good news for the rest of the league.
