Link Dump: Late Night Variety

I'm up checking out the Australian Open Mens final between Andy Murray and Roger Federer. R Fed is looking to win his 16th major championship, while Murray is looking to end a long winless streak for Brits in the open era.

Congrats to Serena Williams on winning her fifth Aussie Open title and her 12th major overall. She and Justin Henin had a terrific championship match that was full of momentum shifts. Serena and Venus also won the doubles championship. With that win the sisters have 11 doubles titles under their belts.

Here are a couple of links that caught my eye.

NBA Line of the Night....50 Ball Addition

Andre Miller dropped 52 points on Saturday to help the Portland Trailblazers capture on OT win over the Dallas Mavericks. Stop, pinch yourself, and read the first line again. It was the first time the former Utah star has eclipsed the 50 point mark in his NBA career.

Miller had 52 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals while making 22 of 31 shots from the field.

NBA Video: Derrick Rose Beast Dunk over Dragic and The After Effect

This is post #1,000 here on Sports with Mr. Factoid. We've been around for almost a year and I never would've thought that I would reach 1,000 posts of any kind, so this is a cool moment. Thank you to all those that have graced the blog with your presence. It means the world to me to have so many people from all over the world stop by. Last I checked we had readers in 177 countries which is pretty damn good if you ask me. So, I say thank you again for the support, keep coming by leaving sharing your thoughts, and Sports Rule!

I completely understand that this dunk was like two weeks ago or something, but it was incredible and I felt compelled to still post it. Derrick Rose was flat out filthy in Phoenix and that dunk he had was sick! His elevator rose all the way to the 12th floor, but young Dragic got dropped off at eight.

Check out the after effect of the Rose/Dragic dunk here as Emeka Okafor thinks twice before going up for the shot block. D-Rose has seven footers nervous now, and that is an awful scary thought.

Herschel Walker Proves Age Aint Nothing But a Number

As previously reported here, NFL legend Hershel Walker was in training for an MMA bout and on Saturday night Walker fulfilled his dream. Strikeforce held a live event from Miami featuring Cris Cyborg and Nate Diaz. The card that was televised was awesome. The former Olympian Walker stepped inside the octagon looking shredded and totally focused on the task at hand. His opponent Greg Nagy entered the bout with a record of 1-1.

Walker established control of the fight early by having better boxing technique. Within the first 35-45 seconds Nagy was bleeding from the noise and Herschel never looked back. Number #34 used and abused Nagy on the ground for majority of the fight, showing better skills then most assumed he had. The bout was called to a halt in the third and one of the great Tecmo Bowl running backs earned himself a TKO victory. Herschel really prepared for the moment and came out the better for it.

I will admit that even at 47 years old, he is in terrific condition and clearly can hold his own in glorified MMA sparring sessions! I take nothing away from his performance at all, but I'm glad that he didn't commit to fighting anymore during the post fight interview. I hope that he'll realize that he's proven his point and pursuing a career at this late age wouldn't be prudent.

Check out the fight footage below.

Is Golf Missing Tiger???

With the Torrey Pines Golf Tournament kicking off this weekend, the field will be missing one familiar face, that one of Tiger Woods. Woods who has been M.I.A since his "car accident" late last year, is usually a favorite to win this tournament & has only missed this tournament two other times in his career. But with Tiger usually the favorite to win a lot of tournaments, are his fellow golfers missing him? Phil Mickelson & Rocco Mediate take a moment to give their thoughts.

Warner Will Decide Future Friday

Will he or won't he? In a saga that has almost as many sequels as the Brett Farve story, Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Kurt Warner, will announce his future on Friday. If Warner does leave the game, I believe he will be a Hall Of Famer for sure. He has been one of the leagues best quarterbacks the last 10 years & will definitely be missed by the fans of Arizona, as he is by the fans in St. Louis.

Ochocinco Readies Life After Football

Chad Ochocinco looks to be getting prepared for a music career after football, as the Cincinatti Bengals' wide receiver, released his new single earlier this week, "Dat Ain't My Baby." I'm not sure what to think about the new tune also known as "Girl, U Trippin'." My guess is he should stick to football & trying to find a way off of Revis Island, but here it is so you be the judge for yourself.

Cardinals Get Ready For '10 Season

The St. Louis Cardinals, my favorite baseball team, were recently featured on ESPN discussing off season moves & the upcoming 2010 season. With the resigning of Matt Holiday, it looks like this could be another promising season for the Redbirds. Maybe this year I can finally see my dream World Series of Cardinals vs Yankees. One can only wish.

Recently President Barack Obama, took some time away from his busy schedule to lay his Super Bowl prediction on Diane Sawyer.

Baseball Video: Jose Offerman Takes a Swing at Umpire

Managers and umpires have been getting into it for years on the baseball diamond. Some of the most entertaining moments in baseball history actually involve manager/umpire clashes. Guys like Lou Pinella, Sparky Anderson, Tommy Lasorda, and others have all participated in classic moments that live on well past their managing days.

Looks like we can add another name to the list of nutty baseball managers. Former MLB player Jose Offerman manages a Dominican winter league team known as the Licey Tigers. After Offerman's catcher was ejected for arguing balls and strikes, Jose had more than a few choice words for the umps and threw a WWE style right hook at Daniel Rayburn for his trouble.

Offerman, who has had some issues with anger management in the past was immediately arrested and taken to jail. At this point it isn't clear whether Rayburn will file assault charges against Offerman.

Everywhere that you turn these days some athlete is doing something stupid and this incident certainly ranks very high on the damn dumb list. Take a look here for yourself.

I don't care if you are a player, manager/coach, or even an executive, you can't put your hands on the officials that call the games. Yes, they make questionable calls sometimes but that doesn't make it alright to physically abuse them. As far as I'm concerned, Offerman shouldn't be allowed to ever manage another team and should be banned from baseball.

Video: MVP Puppets- House on Fire & Kobe Rapping about His New Sneakers...

The madness continues with Nikes' MVP Puppet series. In this first commercial a fire has burned down some of the MVP's mansion. The only clue that survived was Kobe's latest shoe, the Nike Zoom Kobe V. According to the 'official' from the fire department, the shoe is "too hot" and clearly responsible for the blaze!

This second clip features a rap by Kobe about the Nike Zoom Kobe V with a little help from Foot Locker's guys in stripes.

NBA Video: CJ Miles Dunks on Anthony Parker

CJ Miles stole the ball from Andy Varejao and went coast to coast against the Cavaliers Thursday night, finishing the play with a thunderous dunk over Anthony Parker. It's not dunk of the year nor will it be in the top 10 best dunks of the year, but it's definitely a poster.

NBA Video: Monta Ellis Makes Trick Shot from 46 Row

Monta Ellis gets to shoot anytime he wants in Golden State and from the looks of this video he can hit from just about anywhere in the arena too. Check out the Warriors franchise player as he makes an absolutely amazing trick shot from what looks like the 46 row.

I loved how Ellis laughed after he made it, saying " I told you I warmed that thang up, I told you I warmed that thang up man." Dude is a true country boy and if I didn't have family from the south I wouldn't have understood a word he said.

NBA TV Video: Kevin McHale on Dominique Wilkins

I always enjoy hearing the old guys tell stories of their playing days and how the game has evolved over the years. Shout out to Awful Announcing for posting this clip of Kevin McHale's take on Dominique Wilkins.

NBA TV's Kevin McHale and Chris Webber share their favorite Dominique Wilkins stories on GameTime 1.12.10 from Turner Sports on Vimeo.

That was a great little story that Kevin had and I wish NBA TV had located the actual footage of Nique putting his junk in McHale's face! If the dunk was as good as the story, it's certainly priceless.

Note: Does anybody alive have a better job than Ernie Johnson?

Link Dump: The Late Night Variety

The sports blogosphere has been eating 'Big Mac' up over the last 36 hours. Every writer and blogger from east to west has an opinion and who can blame them. Big Mac was once an iconic figure across this great country, and especially here in the Lou. Hell, we actually named part of Highway I-70 after him. That's all in the past.

I've been in St. Louis all my life and the one thing that the people love here is baseball. We don't compare ourselves to Red Sox nation or to the evil empire known as the New York Yankees because we don't have to. St. Louis has been home to countless hall of famers and we have the second most world series championships(10) of all time. Baseball fans here are purist. It's part of the culture in this town. That's why McGwire's admission of steroid use burns so bad.

Although many want him crucified, I'm not personally upset with Mark because it was blatantly obvious that the man was on something. Even a blind man could have seen it. He looked more like a Mack truck than a baseball player during his last few years in Oakland and while he was a Cardinal, but nobody here cared because we had a huge homerun hitting star.

The one thing that I can say is that I'm happy that McGwire came out with this when he did. As our newly appointed hitting coach, it was better that he come clean prior to spring training in order to prevent the media circus that would have engulfed our team in Jupiter. If he hadn't done so, all the attention would have been focused on his past while the Cardinals prepared for the 2010 season.

I just wanted to say that before I dropped a few links.

Video: Charles Barkley as Alicia Keys for SNL Skit

I just couldn't resist posting this clip. If you missed Sir Charles on the NBC NFL wildcard bridge show Saturday night, here is some footage that he will never live down. Here is Barkley dressed like pop diva Alicia Keys performing the hit "Empire State of Mind." I'm not sure if this skit made the show or not. I never watch SNL.

I hope that Ernie, Kenny, and the TNT staff punish Charles with that clip for a long time. We already knew he couldn't sing, but now we have proof that he's one ugly woman. Great comic relief! Thanks Chuck.

NBA Blooper Video: JR Smith Not Paying Attention

Weird play from the Nuggets v Kings game on Saturday night. Tyreke Evans misses a three pointer, but JR Smith doesn't realize he missed it and steps out of bounds like it was a made basket! This is what you call a lack of concentration that would get you cursed out by your AAU or college coach. Take a look!

Peyton Manning Wins Record Fourth NFL MVP

Peyton Manning was named the NFL MVP on Saturday morning, making him the first player in league history to win the award four times. Manning was MVP in 2003, 2004, and also 2008. The voting wasn't even close, as Manning earned 39 1/2 votes compared to only 7 1/2 for Drew Brees. Phillip Rivers received 2 votes and surprisingly Brett Favre had just one vote.

"I'm very humbled and grateful to be honored with this award and I really feel like it is a reflection of our team," said Manning.

Peyton had great numbers this year and was on the verge of leading his team to an undefeated regular season before the Colts decided to rest their starters in week 16. His 4,500 passing yards is second only to the historic season he had in 2004(4,557), and he threw for 33 TD's. This season Manning also set new personal bests for completion percentage at 68.8% and completions with 393.

I've had the privilege to watch some of the greatest QB's of all time during my lifetime and Peyton Manning ranks at or very near the top of that list. Congrats to Peyton on a terrific achievement.

NBA Video: Amare Stoudemire Dunks on Shane Battier

Amare Stoudemire is one of the most ferocious dunkers in all of the NBA. When he and Steve Nash have their pick & roll offense working it's a thing of beauty for Phoenix Suns fans and a nightmare for opposing defenses. Check it out.

Shane Battier is recognized as one of the better defenders in the league, but he had absolutely no chance at stopping the Amare express on that play. Next time just take the charge Shane and save yourself the embarrassment.

The Miami Heat were unable to get a win against the Celtics on Wednesday night, losing the game 112-106 in OT, but D-Wade had another strong statistical performance.

Boxing News: Mayweather v Pacquiao is Dead.....

Fight fans around the globe can stop holding their collective breath in anticipation of a bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. According to various boxing outlets the mega fight that was supposed to be scheduled for March 13 is officially off.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has stated that "the fight is off", and that Top Rank is moving forward in an attempt to secure an opponent for Pacquiao for the same March 13 date.

Both Top Rank and Golden Boy promotions engaged in a mediation session on Tuesday which lasted approximately nine hours. When the two sides exited the mediation, both Mayweather and Pacquiao were given a revised contract to review and sign. Those close to the fighters report that Pacquiao was fine with the revision, but Mayweather wasn't in agreement, thus ending any realistic chance of making the fight happen in March or possibly ever.

At this point Arum is looking to put Manny in against Yuri Foreman for a 154 pound title fight. For Pacquiao, this is an opportunity to win a title in an eighth weight class. I've heard rumblings that Floyd may try to set up a fight with Pauli Malignaggi.

With the bout being scrapped, the boxing public is being cheated out of a must see fight. Professional boxing can't afford many more black eyes and this is surely one of the worst in recent memory.

Link Dump (1/5/2010): What Caught Factoids Eye?

I really enjoyed the holidays this year. It's always nice to spend time with family & friends and last year wasn't any different. I may have spent more money than I wanted to, but it was all worth it. With that said, it's a new year and a new decade for us all and I'm very excited about what the future holds.

The NFL regular season has come to an end in the blink of an eye. I swear I was just doing my fantasy drafts and setting up my pigskin pick em league. A few weeks back it looked like we may end up with two undefeated teams, as the Saints and Colts marched towards history. The end result was both teams finishing with losses heading into the playoffs. Colts fans were the most upset about not chasing the history books. Coach Jim Caldwell found out that the dogs(media) can turn on you in a flash.

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. still haven't settled their dispute over drug testing, although a mediator is currently working with both sides in a last minute effort to save the biggest money making fight in boxing history. Rumors are flying about who would replace Mayweather if the two sides cannot come to an agreement. Guys like Yuri Foreman, Pauli Malignaggi, and even Zab Judah are being mentioned to take Floyd's place. Check back with me regularly and take a look at the tweets at the bottom right side of the blog for the latest details.

There is definitely a lot going on in the world of sports, so let's take a look at a few things that caught my eye on the first Tuesday of the new year.
