Sports fans can be some of the most obnoxious jerkoffs on the planet when they want to be. Whether it's the NBA, NFL, NHL, or MLB fans speak up and speak out when they see fit. I can remember being an undergrad and being one of the biggest assholes in the world at school sporting events. I actually gave the business to our head basketball coach during games. He deserved it, but that's an entirely different story. On Tuesday night, long time NBA official Joe DeRosa had a little altercation with a fan that is quickly becoming big news. At the half of the Boston/Orlando game, a fan behind the scorers table had a few choice words for DeRosa. The 18 year vet fired the game ball at the heckler, who actually caught it and threw it right back. By the looks of the video, DeRosa then requested some assistance from security to handle the belligerent fan. See it here.
Commissioner Stern doesn't have much tolerance for referee criticism, but this isn't your average case of a blown call. Although the entire incident was harmless and nobody was injured, DeRosa lost his cool and let his emotions dictate his actions towards a fan. It wasn't smart and I bet he gets fined or suspended. I'll be keeping an eye out to see how the league office handles the situation.
