Monday Link Dump: What Caught Factoids Eye?

Tiger is dominating the headlines with this accident. There is speculation about domestic violence, mistresses, and of course infidelity. I for one am not certain what happened with Tiger Woods and his wife, but there is one thing I am certain of, and that is the fact that Woods' squeaky clean image ain't so squeaky anymore.
Charlie Weis finally got the axe in Notre Dame according to various reports today. Weis, who still had 6 years left on his contract will apparently be looking for work elsewhere after failing to transform the Irish back into one of the most elite programs in the country. Weis's career record stands at 35-27.
Here are a couple things that caught my eye today.

I realize that this next video is about a week old, but when I saw it I cracked up. Who would have every thought that Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin would be competing on Dancing with The Stars? It's absurd. If you missed it like I did, here you go.
NBA Video: Kendrick Perkins Dunks on Jermaine O'Neal
Serena Williams Fined $82,500 for US Open Tirade.
The fine isn't what concerns me here. The probation is what I have a problem with. I understand a need to conduct the game in a professional manner. It's a global product that needs to have a positive image. Organizations have to have it that way. I believe that you fine and move on.
For Williams, every future circumstance will be different from what happened at the US Open. When Serena disagrees with something now, every piece of what she says will be scrutinized above and beyond what it was in the past. She's is being told not to argue calls, not to question 'authority', and to keep her mouth shut for two years.
I don't think that you should take a players ability to question away. The officials and others are people who can influence the game if they see fit. Tennis isn't baseball. The players argue. Connors and McEnroe argued and cursed more than any pair in tennis. When they disagreed they questioned, and when they didn't get the answers they were looking for they yelled, screamed, and threw expletives like left hooks. Serena isn't different and shouldn't be treated different than Connors and J-Mac.
I hope that she will appeal the decision and seek a way around the probation.

Tuesday Link Dump (11/24/09): What Caught Factoids Eye

Random Rant: Is it me or are the same teams in the BCS title picture every year? It seems that way, but not so much this year. At least USC and Oklahoma are down. I'm not saying that to down either program, because they have produced some top tier NFL talent, but how many times must the public be forced to watch the same teams? Ohio State, Florida, and Texas have been models of BCS success and that continues this season. I'm tired of them too. The system needs some new blood.
Here are a couple of things that caught my eye today.

The next time that Oden comes over on baseline help, he may want to do so just a bit faster. It's always the man that tries to help that ends up on the poster! I would luv to see Mr. Rose in this years slam dunk competition at All-Star Weekend.
Video: Ron Artest on Jimmy Kimmel
Artest took some time out of his busy NBA schedule to appear on the Jimmy Kimmel show, a program that I must say has made it's way onto this blog on several different occasions. Artest appreared in boxer shorts and no shirt. It's a two part interview, so check it out.

Boxing Video: Floyd Mayweather Interview after Pacquiao v Cotto Bout
If Top Rank and Golden Boy can come to some sort of financial terms, a Mayweather v Pacquiao fight would be one of the biggest attractions in professional boxing history. Cross your fingers fight fans and say a little prayer to the boxing Gods.

Boxing: Factoid's P4P Rankings

Feel free to go back to the original rankings (link above) and compare those with the new set.
1. Manny Pacquiao- welterweight/jr.welterweight
The Pac-Man maintains his spot atop the P4P rankings after a very one-sided beat down of Miguel Cotto. I don't think anyone in the boxing community anticipated Manny would destroy Cotto the way he did. With the victory he became the first boxer in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight classes. Pacquiao has become boxing biggest sensation and he is poised for a matchup against the former #1 Floyd Mayweather, that's if both sides can agree on the money.
2. Floyd Mayweather -welterweight/jr.middleweight
Money Mayweather made a triumphant return to the ring in September with a victory over Juan Manuel Marquez. Floyd showed little signs of ring rust during the bout, displaying the ring generalship that had him at the top of the fight game prior to his retirement. Mayweather says he wants to fight a couple of times a year for the next few years, which is great news for boxing fans. As you read this post negotiations are under way to make a Pacquiao v Mayweather bout a reality. That fight would be one of the biggest in boxing history.
3. Juan Manuel Marquez-lightweight
Marquez drops only one spot from the last set of rankings. Despite being manhandled by a "bigger" Floyd Mayweathter Jr., Marquez is still recognized as the best boxer in the lightweight division. Juan still wants another shot a Pacquiao, but he will have to wait in line for a shot at the Pac-Man.
4. Paul Williams-welterweight/jr. middleweight/middleweight
Williams and his camp thought they had a shot at the middleweight title, but Kelly Pavlik was forced to back out twice due to a staph infection on his left hand. The "Punisher" will now take on jr. middleweight title holder Sergio Martinez on December 5th. Most P4P rankings list Williams as a jr. middleweight & a middleweight, but Paul claims he can still make the 147 pound welterweight limit. That is why I list him in all three divisions. The boy is a beast!
5. Shane Mosely-welterweight
After a KO victory of Antonio Margarito in January, 'Sugar' Shane Mosely wanted to fight Manny Pacquiao, but negotiations fell through between the Golden Boy and Top Rank camps. He then tried to get another shot at Miguel Cotto. That story ended the same as the first. After all the bobbing and weaving, Mosely will finally get back into the ring against young Andre Berto in January. It's not what Mosely had in mind, but it's an opportunity to pick up another trinket title belt.
6. Wladimir Klitschko-heavyweight
Let's face the facts. Heavyweight boxing is dominated by fighters outside of the United States. The key belts are held by the Klitschko brothers and newly crowned WBA champion David Haye. Wladimir Klitschko, who holds the IBF and WBO titles has been off work since June when he used and abused Ruslan Chagaev. Dr. Steelhammer has a proposed fight with American Eddie Chambers in March.
7. Bernard Hopkins-light heavyweight
B-Hop and Roy Jones Jr. appear to be on a collision course, but before they can get it on for the second time, Hopkins needs to get past Enrique Ornelas on the 2nd of December. Hopkins hasn't been in the ring since October of 2008, when he outclassed middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. If and when Hopkins defeats Ornelas, a Jones Jr. bout would take place sometime early in 2010. Jones also needs to get by Danny Green.
8. Ivan Calderon-light flyweight
The light flyweight king has had a couple of ugly fights against Rodel Mayol in the last six months, but still remains the WBO champ. At 33-0-1, Calderon is an underrated and vastly unknown commodity in boxing. He's a tough little guy with a skill set to match. His next fight is TBA.
9. Chris John-featherweight
Chris John took care of business in his September rematch with Rocky Juarez by claiming a unanimous decision victory. John improved his record to 43-0-2 with 22 KO's. The Indonesian star recently fell ill, but is expected to be fine. If you aren't familiar with John, he defeated my #3 guy Juan Manuel Marquez back in 2006 by UD.
10. Nonito Donaire
Donaire stays put at #10 on my P4P list. Nonito claimed the interim WBA World super flyweight title in August with a victory over Rafael Concepcion, but like Chris John fell ill not long after. I've never heard of dengue fever, but it slowed my #9 and #10 guys down for a spell. According to reports he has recovered and will likely fight in February.
**With the Super Six World Boxing Tournament underway, it was difficult for me to rank any of the super middleweights involved. With that said, I will wait until the completion of the first few rounds before reevaluating their positions.
Notables: Chad Dawson, Tomasz Adamek, Vic Darchinyan, Josh Clottey, Juan Manuel Lopez, Rafael Marquez, Israel Vasquez, Timothy Bradley, Lucian Bute, Celestino Cabellero
Well, that is the updated P4p list the way that I see it. Please feel free to comment if you disagree.
Tuesday Link Dump (11/17/09): What Caught Factoids Eye
I'm almost positive that I wasn't the only person that thought last nights Monday Night football game sucked ass. The Browns are terrible. I am wondering who's idea it was to have such a bad team on in primetime. MNF this season has been awesome, but that trash last night ruined a good run.
ESPN is running a 24 hour college hoops marathon and I'm absolutely loving it. UCLA took the fall right of the bat to Cal State Fullerton. Even though the Bruins were not ranked, that still counts as a major upset. I'm locked in for the rest of the day, guaranteed!
Today's headlines have included the firing of Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron, Zach Greinke winning the AL Cy Young, and Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis requesting a trade out of Oakland. It's been a good sports day so far.

Video: Kentucky's John Wall Hits Game Winner over Miami (OH)
With just seconds remaining on the clock Miami of Ohio guard Kenny Hayes drilled a deep three pointer to tie the game at 70. Hayes pulled up from well beyond NBA range and with ice water in his veins knocked down a huge shot. The situation at that moment looked bleak for UK, but freshman John Wall received the inbounds pass, dribbled up the floor, and took a shot that Wildcat fans will not soon forget.
With plays like this one the Kentucky faithful are in for a long roller coaster season. Coach Cal is going to need a strong defensive effort on a nightly basis if he expects his team to have a high level of success this year. Wall lead his team in scoring with 19 points.
NBA Video: Dirk Hits Game Winner in OT to Beat the Bucks
The Mavs and Bucks battled through four quarters and an overtime period before one team could walk away the winner. Nowitzki, who had an awesome statistical performance(32 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block), once again played the hero for Dallas by drilling a 20 foot jumper at the buzzer to seal a win for the Mavericks. Check it out here.

Friday the 13th Link Dump: What Caught Factoids Eye?
As a kid there was something about Friday the 13th that always made the hairs on my arm stand up. Maybe it was the fact that I could count on a Friday the 13th movie marathon to keep me glued to the TV, or how my friends always had some bizarre and fictional tale about murder and mayhem on my block. The day back then was way cooler than it is as an adult. This Friday the 13th its all about the NBA game tonight, the Pacquiao v Cotto weigh-in, and some college football. I'm not anticipating watching Jason Voorhees terrorize the kids at Camp Crystal Lake, but instead I'll catch some of Friday Night Smackdown and chug a couple 40 ounces. Yes, I said 40 ounces! It's a long story.
My point is that Friday the 13th just isn't what it used to be. I'm not scared to run across a black cat in the street, but I am scared to think of what will happen if I fail to set my fantasy hoops lineup. That has the potential to be a real nightmare! Maybe when I have some little Factoids things will be different, but until then this day has lost all of its luster.
It's early, but lets see what has caught my eye this morning.

Tuesday Link Dump (11/10/09): What Caught Factoids Eye?

The Browns are an organization in complete disarray and this move in just another piece of evidence to submit to the judge. Quinn was the man to start the year and he failed to get much of anything going. The team traded their franchise wideout Braylon Edwards to the Jets after he punched one of LeBron's hommies. Eric Mangini's hand picked GM was fired, yet he still maintains his post as head coach. Derek Anderson stepped in and was as pathetic as a starting QB can be in the National Football League. I don't think any further comment is necessary.
I need to start playing poker! Early this morning 21-year-old Joe Cada won $8.65 million at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Cada is the youngest player to ever win the tournament. The runner-up, Darvin Moon still walked away with $5.18 million. That's great money just to play cards!

Video: Female Diver Hits Her Head on Springboard...
In the following clip a young diver cracks her skull on the springboard just after takeoff. The boards force was strong enough to catapult her into the middle of the pool. It's not pretty, but fortunately for her she managed to get out of the pool without any assistance.
This is the first time that I've seen a diver hit the front of their head or face on the board. Most folks that follow diving remember the great Greg Louganis hitting the back of his head during the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

Friday Link Dump: What Caught Factoids Eye?

This weekend is full of intriguing matchups in the NCAA, NBA, NHL, NFL, MMA, and in professional boxing. That's a lot of action. I'm looking forward to camping out in front of the tube with some ice cold beer and catching as much as possible.
LeBron is in New York tonight. That game is live on ESPN in less than an hour. The King should be looking to put on a show at the Garden. The rest of the Cavaliers need to step up and help get that team rolling.
Zab Judah and Joel Casamayor are fighting tonight. They aren't fighting each other, but they are both on the same PPV card. Who knew?

Pacquiao grabbed a microphone and performed the classic song, "Sometimes When we Touch" last night on the Kimmel show.
